We're glad that you found us on the web. Please take a look at our listings and enjoy learning more about our farm. We welcome your enquiries and questions!

Pyramid Alpacas is a working Huacaya farm on 25 acres in Frederick County, Virginia—about three miles east of I-81 and six miles north of historic Winchester. Since 2006 we have raised alpacas here in the northern Shenandoah Valley and opened the farm so visitors can meet the herd, follow fleece from paddock to yarn, and take something of the farm home. We are a short drive from Loudoun wine country, Skyline Drive, and Civil War sites around Winchester and Clear Brook.

The farm is home to about fifty Huacaya alpacas—the fluffy, teddy-bear type whose dense, crimped fleece stands out from the body. That crimp gives the fiber loft and warmth. It is the fleece we skirt, wash, pick, card, and spin in the Fibersmith Studio. Two multi-champion herd sires anchor an active breeding program, so there are usually crias in the paddocks. If you would like a longer tie to a particular animal in the herd, ask about our alpaca sponsorship program.

Alpaca fiber is naturally low in lanolin, so many people who itch in sheep’s wool can wear it comfortably. It is also naturally flame-resistant: it does not melt, and a flame on the fiber tends to go out on its own. Compared with sheep’s wool of similar weight, Huacaya fleece is typically about 20 percent warmer because the fibers trap air. It also resists odor: it holds less moisture than wool, so bacteria have less to work with and garments stay fresher longer.

The Farm Store carries our own farm products and raw fleeces, along with finished alpaca apparel, home goods, and plush toys. Next door, Shenandoah Fibersmith Studio is set up for the whole fiber path: skirting tables, washer, drying racks, mill picker, carders, e-spinners, and a FeltLoom. Choose a raw fleece and work it through to needle-felted pieces or yarn for your own project. Visitors are welcome to learn the craft while they are here—not only to watch. You can leave as a fibersmith, with fleece prepared for felting or yarn ready for your next alpaca creation.

Come for the animals, stay for the fiber, and leave with a piece of the Valley you helped make. Visits are by appointment so we can give you time with the animals and the studio.
